On Valentine’s Day and every day, taking care of my heart makes it to the top of my to-do list. Why? So many reasons! First off, I’m a 51 year old new mom and I want to be around for Romy’s high school graduation and beyond. And heart disease is the #1 killer of women (and men) in the United States.
You may need to give your legs a rest after an intense workout, but your heart is the one muscle you should work on each and every day. Here are my top 5 reasons for taking care of my heart:
1. Improved Longevity: A healthy heart can significantly reduce your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, helping you live a longer life.
2. Better Energy and Stamina: Regular exercise and heart health help improve circulation, leading to better oxygen flow throughout your body, which boosts your energy and endurance.
3. Mental Health Benefits: Heart health is linked to a reduction in stress and anxiety. Physical activity, which is crucial for heart health, also releases endorphins that help improve mood.
4. Improved Quality of Life: A well-maintained heart means you’re more likely to remain active and independent as you age, reducing the chance of debilitating conditions and allowing you to stay involved in activities you love, whether that’s ballroom dancing or walking your labradoodle.
5. A Healthier Brain: Better circulation isn’t only beneficial for your heart, but your brain too! Keeping your blood pumping with regular exercise means you’re not only taking care off your ticker, but also your brain.
